TRUE SURVIVOR: MEET RITA LYNN

I am a survivor of domestic violence. From the time, I was 15 yrs old up until I was 28 years old, I was in an abusive relationship that nearly ended my life twice and hospitalized me many times. I had 3 children from this toxic relationship but it wasn’t until I had my daughter that I knew I needed to leave. I had everything from black eyes, to bloody noses, to finger prints around my neck to bruises up and down my back, hair missing you name it. I used makeup to try and hide what was happening to me behind closed doors. Having my daughter made me realize I didn’t want her to think the way her father was treating me was how a man was supposed to treat her, nor did I want my sons to think that’s how they were to treat women. One day when my daughter was about 3 months old I found out my children’s father was cheating again and I attempted to confront him about it.
He immediately began to punch me in the face while I was holding our daughter and tell me to mind my business, he drug me all through our 2 bedroom apartment beating me up and eventually ended up choking me in our room to the point of me passing out. I had left so many times before but I did what most women do and I took him back. That night I heard a voice tell me if you don’t leave, next time he is going to kill you.  I went to a neighbor and offered her and her family everything I had in my apartment. I packed 3 small bags for myself and my children and I left. It wasn’t until I left that I started to see makeup as an enhancer of beauty and not a mask to hide abuse. I started doing Facebook lives as therapy because I needed to talk about it. Through that I have had so many women reach out to me for encouragement, support, and advice on how to leave or what signs to look for.
I have been able to book gigs and speak to other women that were in my same situation. I have been able to be REAL about me, I have been able to speak openly about abuse and how it affected me. Personally, and professional it has allowed me to find my passion and purpose in life. My goal is to add to someone’s’ life, add to their happiness, help build them back up, be support and encouragement but most of all show them that CHOOSING LIFE is always the best option.

FILM ALERT! WALK IN MY SHOES

David Lloyd Marcus is a thought provoking author who was born and raised in Pumphrey, MD which is a predominantly black suburb located outside of south Baltimore City.  His raw and uncut style is what his brand is built upon. His brand has grown over the past several years since the release of his first book “Ouch this May Hurt “2012. The Ouch brand is known for its raw candor, no fluff and honest perspective on relationships as well as life. To this date he has written two books which includes “Ouch this May Hurt” (2012) and “Life of an Alpha Male” (2016) respectively. Additionally, Mr. Marcus was the ghost writer of another book “Fourth and a long Shot (The Jarryn Avery Story)” (2014).
Fourth and a Long Shot received critical acclaim as it was highlighted on the front page of the Washington Post on December 1, 2014. He is also collaborating with Avery to write the script for 4th and a Long Shot. David Lloyd Marcus is now transitioning from books to film with his debut title Walk in My Shoes; a nontraditional love story, an Indie film shot in the Baltimore area.  The film exposes relationships in the same raw and uncut manner and philosophy that is consistent with his brand.
